Cannot Open Volume For Direct Access Usb
Unable to run CHKDSK. Cannot open volume for direct access. Such locking of the drive partition may be due to third party virus checker or disk monitor tool. Cannot Open Volume For Direct Access Sep 14, 2012. I have a windows 7 operating system 18.5' HP Pavilion All -in -one PC AND I am trying to run the CHKDSK Utility. I tried it says cannot open volume for direct access. View 5 Replies Similar Messages: Direct Access To Domain Network; How To Open Street Fighter Benchmark Without Direct 3d.
Scandisk failing: 'Cannot Open Volume For Direct Access'. Scandisk starts to load normally but then it spits out 'cannot open volume for direct access.' Most of the time I'm able to remove.
Windows 10 Cannot Access Files
HydraShok, are you suggesting I run that command on my boot disk or on my removable drive? If you're talking about the boot drive, wouldn't forcing the unmounting of the disk while the OS is running cause a bit of a problem?I was in a similar situation just yesterday (autochk running at boot, then failing to reboot, thus not fixing the problem). Chkdsk /x /f will work on your removable drive, but not on your boot drive (unless you boot off something else and run it).I'd say follow ahmerali's advice.
I'll check out BartPE and see if that works. Running chkdsk is important, but the real goal is to get Windows to do it properly. If I have to always use BartPE to run chkdsk then I'm not really in a good position.I'm running AVG 8, not sure exactly which point release it is, but it is up to date. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it, and it seems to be working fine. No viruses as far as I can tell.I will also try reapplying SP3 and see if that works. However, would it be equally helpful to run a system file check scan (sfc.exe /scannow) rather than reapplying the service pack? Advantages/disadvantages to one approach over the other?Lastly, any idea how to determine which program is holding access to my external drive?
Most of the time I'm able to remove my USB HD without issue, but once in a while I get an error saying the disk is in use. Usually a log out/log in fixes it, but it's still irritating. Riskin,That is correct, check duisk will NOT be able to fix any problems on any volume that is locked. And your boot drive has open files that the OS usese/needs.In order to check your drive, you need to run chkdsk c: /r from the command prompt. You'll get the message below. Press Y and reboot. Using the /r switch also causes chkdsk to check free space the OS has marked being full.
This will add time to the checkdisk function, and in some cases a lot of extra time, so be fore warned.Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by a process. Would you like to schedule this volume to checked the next time the system restarts?

On my my Windows XP SP3 box, when running Windows normally, from the command prompt I type chkdsk C: /R (or, equivalently, in Windows Explorer, right-click on the C: drive- Properties- Tools- Check Now.), I get the normal. The volume is in use. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) message. I choose Y, then later I do Start- Turn Off Computer- Restart. When I restart, during the boot process I see white letters on a blue background that say Checking file system on C:The type of the file system is NTFS.Cannot open volume for direct access.Windows has finished checking the disk.Later it seems to boot normally into the graphical desktop. My understanding is that message comes from chkdsk when some other program is using the hard drive, so chkdsk does nothing. What should I do to get chkdsk to actually check the disk?
(How is it even possible that some other program starts running before Windows finishes booting up into Safe Mode?). I had exactly the same problem yesterday. For me the following fixed it:. Boot from an XP installation cd. When asked whether to install or repair, choose repair.

Once you're in the repair console, run chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r on the volume you need. The drives may not be in the same order as they are when you boot your XP. If you need to chkdsk any drive other than c: that also appears to be locked during boot (for example, a temp or swap volume), check via the MAP command which letter it is mapped to, and perform your chkdsk again.
